Building the Future

Our Vision

A world where no capable UK student is denied a career in medicine because of limited domestic places.

The Problem

The UK Medical Admissions Crisis

Every year, over 28,000 UK home students apply to study medicine through UCAS. Only 9,500 receive offers. That means nearly 19,000 academically capable students — many with AAA or higher at A-Level — are rejected.

The NHS simultaneously faces its worst-ever staffing crisis, with over 8,000 unfilled doctor vacancies across England alone. The paradox is stark: thousands of motivated students want to become doctors, the health service desperately needs them, yet the system cannot train enough.

UK medical school expansion plans announced in 2023 will not produce additional graduates until 2030 at the earliest. For students rejected today, waiting is not an option.

The Future We're Building

Our Long-Term Vision

We are building the UK's most comprehensive medical admissions platform — combining expert human consultants with intelligent university matching technology.

Our goal is to make studying medicine abroad as straightforward, safe, and successful as studying in the UK, while providing the support structures that ensure every student completes their degree and returns to serve in the NHS.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are so many UK students rejected from medical school?
The UK only has approximately 9,500 medical school places for over 28,000 applicants each year. This structural undersupply means that even students with excellent A-Level grades (AAA or above) and strong UCAT scores face rejection. The competition is driven by limited government funding for medical training places, not by a lack of qualified applicants.
Is studying medicine in Europe a legitimate alternative?
Absolutely. Thousands of doctors currently practising in the NHS graduated from European medical schools. These institutions are GMC-recognised, meet EU educational standards, and offer world-class clinical training. Many European medical schools are older and more established than UK institutions — Charles University in Prague was founded in 1348.
What does Medicine Clearing's vision mean for UK healthcare?
Our vision directly addresses the NHS staffing crisis. By helping UK students study medicine abroad and return as qualified doctors, we create an additional pipeline of British-trained medical professionals who will serve in the NHS. Every student we place is a future NHS doctor who would otherwise have been lost to the profession.
How many applicants are rejected from UK medicine each year?
Over 19,000 UK students are rejected from medical school through UCAS each year — approximately two-thirds of all applicants. These are not unqualified students — the majority hold AAB or above at A-Level and have completed substantial work experience.
Will the UK ever have enough medical school places?
The UK government has announced expansion plans, but these will not produce additional graduates until 2030 at the earliest. Even with planned increases, demand is projected to continue outstripping supply for at least a decade. For students applying now, European medical schools remain the most reliable pathway.
Are European medical degrees recognised worldwide?
Yes. Medical degrees from EU-accredited universities are recognised across all EU/EEA member states, as well as by the GMC in the UK, the WHO, and medical councils in the USA, Canada, Australia, and most other countries. Graduates can practise in over 50 countries worldwide.
What is the UKMLA and how does it affect international graduates?
The UK Medical Licensing Assessment (UKMLA) is replacing both UK finals and the PLAB exam. All graduates — UK or international — will sit the same licensing exam. This creates a completely level playing field and removes any perceived stigma of a separate examination.
How does Medicine Clearing ensure university quality?
Every university in our network undergoes rigorous vetting. We assess GMC recognition status, teaching quality, graduate outcomes, clinical training facilities, English-language programme maturity, and PLAB pass rates. We conduct site visits and interview current students. Universities that do not meet our standards are not included.
Can I transfer back to a UK medical school mid-course?
Transferring mid-course is extremely rare due to capacity constraints. We advise students to commit fully to their European programme, as the degree is equally valid and the clinical experience is often superior. The end result — GMC registration and NHS practice — is identical regardless of where you studied.
What makes the European application process different from UCAS?
European medical schools operate rolling admissions with multiple intake dates. There is no single October deadline, no centralised personal statement, and usually no interview. Applications are assessed primarily on academic merit. You can apply to unlimited universities simultaneously, and offers are typically issued within 2-6 weeks.
Does studying abroad affect my student loan eligibility?
UK Student Finance does not cover tuition at most European universities. However, many families find that European fees combined with lower living costs make the total investment comparable to UK study. We provide detailed financial planning as part of our consultation.
What is the dropout rate at European medical schools?
Students placed through Medicine Clearing have significantly better retention rates because we match them to appropriate universities and provide ongoing support. Our students maintain a graduation rate above 90%, compared to the 75-80% average for self-placed international students.
How does Brexit affect studying medicine in Europe?
Brexit has had minimal practical impact. UK students now require a student visa (which we assist with), and some universities have reclassified fee status. However, GMC recognition remains unchanged, education quality is identical, and thousands of UK students continue to enrol each year.
What career specialties are available to European-trained doctors?
All specialties are open once you have GMC registration. Whether you want to become a surgeon, GP, psychiatrist, or any other specialist, you follow the same specialty training pathway as UK-trained doctors after Foundation Year 2. Your country of graduation does not limit your options.
How does Medicine Clearing plan to expand its impact?
Our expansion focuses on three areas: increasing our partner network to 300+ institutions across 50 countries, developing technology-driven matching that pairs students with ideal universities, and launching post-graduation career support including UKMLA preparation courses.
