Overview: Medical Education in Portugal

Portugal is one of Europe's most welcoming and affordable destinations for UK students, combining a warm Atlantic climate with a rapidly growing medical education sector. Lisbon and Porto are increasingly popular European study cities, ranking among the most liveable and affordable capitals on the continent.

NOVA Medical School Lisbon (Faculdade de Ciências Médicas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa) is Portugal's leading English-friendly medical institution, and several private universities including Universidade Lusófona and Instituto Universitário Egas Moniz offer medical programmes accessible to international students. NOVA Medical School in particular has developed international English-track options.

Portugal's healthcare system (SNS — Serviço Nacional de Saúde) has been reformed significantly since 2016 and now represents a solid clinical training environment with major teaching hospitals in Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra. The University of Coimbra — one of Europe's oldest universities (founded 1290) — also has a respected Faculty of Medicine.

Post-Brexit, UK citizens are one of the largest groups of British citizens permanently residing in Portugal (the Algarve has a major British expat community), and Portugal's strong British cultural ties make it an extremely welcoming destination for UK students.

Entry Requirements for UK Students

Portuguese public universities primarily teach in Portuguese (B2–C1 required). NOVA Medical School Lisbon and select private universities offer English-track options requiring A-levels at ABB–AAB in Chemistry and Biology, English proficiency (IELTS 6.5+), and potentially an entrance examination or interview. Contact Medicine Clearing for current English-track availability and specific requirements.

Key institutions include NOVA Medical School Lisbon, University of Lisbon Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto Faculty of Medicine, and University of Coimbra Faculty of Medicine. Graduates must pass PLAB 1 and PLAB 2 for GMC registration.
