Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions from UK home students and their parents about university matching & medical school applications.

How many GMC-recognised medical universities are there in Europe?
There are over 200 GMC-recognised medical schools across Europe offering English-taught programmes. We maintain active partnerships with 250+ institutions across 40+ countries, ensuring we can match every UK student's academic profile, budget, and lifestyle preferences to the optimal institution.
Which European medical schools accept UK students with lower grades?
Several excellent GMC-recognised institutions accept UK students with BBB or BBC at A-Level. These include universities in Poland (Medical University of Bialystok), Latvia (Riga Stradins), Slovakia (Comenius), and Georgia (TSMU). Entry requirements focus on Biology and Chemistry knowledge rather than overall grade thresholds.
Can I transfer from a European medical school to a UK one?
Transferring mid-programme between countries is extremely difficult and rarely successful. However, this is rarely necessary — graduates from GMC-recognised European schools have the same pathway to NHS practice as UK graduates (via PLAB/UKMLA). The end career outcome is identical.
What is the 98% placement success rate based on?
Our 98% success rate reflects confirmed offers received by students who complete our full application management service. This includes profile matching, personal statement writing, document preparation, and admissions liaison. The remaining 2% typically withdraw for personal reasons rather than receiving rejections.
How long does the application process take?
From initial engagement to confirmed offer, the typical timeline is 4-8 weeks for European medical schools. Some institutions offer rolling admissions and can confirm places within 2-3 weeks. This contrasts sharply with UCAS, where the cycle spans 12+ months with uncertain outcomes.
Do you write my personal statement for me?
We collaborate closely with you to produce a compelling personal statement. Our admissions specialists draft, edit, and refine your statement through multiple iterations, ensuring it highlights your strongest attributes while meeting the specific requirements of each target institution. You retain full editorial control.
What is document apostilling and why do I need it?
An apostille is a government-issued certificate that authenticates documents for international use. European universities require apostilled copies of your A-Level certificates, GCSE results, and passport. We manage the entire apostille process through the UK Foreign Office, saving you weeks of administrative complexity.
What is ENIC-NARIC equivalency and do I need it?
ENIC-NARIC provides official statements confirming that your UK qualifications are equivalent to the host country's educational standards. Many European universities require this as part of the application. We obtain these equivalency statements on your behalf as part of our application management service.
Can I apply to multiple European medical schools simultaneously?
Absolutely, and we recommend it. Unlike UCAS (limited to 4 medicine choices), there is no cap on European applications. Most of our students apply to 3-5 institutions across different countries, maximising their chances of receiving multiple offers and choosing the best fit.
What subjects do European medical schools require at A-Level?
Most require Biology and Chemistry at A-Level. Some accept Biology with one other science (Physics, Maths). A few institutions accept three sciences without specific subject requirements. During the matching process, we identify universities aligned with your exact subject combination.
Do European medical schools interview UK applicants?
It varies by institution. Some conduct formal interviews (in-person or online), others use entrance exams only, and some offer conditional places based solely on academic transcripts. We prepare you for whichever assessment format your matched universities use.
Is my UK predicted grade or final grade used for European applications?
Most European universities accept applications based on predicted grades for September entry, with offers conditional on achieving minimum final grades. Post-results applicants (August onwards) apply with confirmed grades, which often strengthens applications as there is no prediction risk.
What happens if my application is rejected?
Rejections are rare with our service (2% of cases), but if they occur, we immediately redirect applications to alternative institutions within our network. Because European admissions operate on rolling timelines, there is usually time to secure an alternative offer within the same academic year.
How do you match me to the right university?
Our matching algorithm considers 12 factors: academic grades, subject combination, budget constraints, preferred country/city, language environment, GMC recognition status, clinical placement quality, student satisfaction data, graduate outcomes, campus facilities, accommodation availability, and family proximity preferences.
Can I start in January or do I have to wait until September?
Some European medical schools offer January/February intake in addition to the standard September start. This is particularly useful for students who miss September deadlines or receive late UCAS rejections. We identify January-start options during the matching process.
What are the tuition fee differences between European countries?
Fees range dramatically: Italy (£156-£4,000/year via income-based ISEE), Poland (£10,000-£14,000/year), Hungary (£12,000-£15,000/year), Czech Republic (£11,000-£17,000/year), Ireland (£14,000-£25,000/year). Norway and Germany offer near-free options. We match your budget to appropriate institutions.
Do you help with scholarship applications?
Yes. Many European medical schools offer merit-based scholarships, fee reductions, or bursaries for international students. We identify available funding opportunities at your matched institutions and assist with scholarship application writing. Some Italian universities offer near-complete fee waivers based on family income.
Is there an age limit for applying to European medical schools?
No. European medical schools do not discriminate by age. We have successfully placed students aged 18 to 35+. Whether you are applying straight from sixth form, after a gap year, or as a mature student changing careers, European admissions focus on academic ability rather than age.
What is the teaching quality like at European medical schools?
Many European medical schools rank among the world's best. Semmelweis (Hungary), Charles University (Czech Republic), and Italian public universities consistently produce excellent clinical outcomes. EU accreditation standards ensure teaching quality meets rigorous benchmarks comparable to UK institutions.
How do I know if a university is genuinely GMC-recognised?
We verify every recommended institution against the GMC's official list of accepted overseas qualifications. Only universities whose graduates are eligible to apply for full GMC registration are included in our recommendations. This verification is a fundamental part of our service — we never recommend unrecognised institutions.
Can I study medicine abroad and still do NHS Foundation Training?
Yes. Graduates from GMC-recognised overseas medical schools apply to Foundation Training via UKFPO (UK Foundation Programme Office) after passing the PLAB/UKMLA. Thousands of international medical graduates enter Foundation Training annually. Our NHS Return service specifically prepares students for this transition.
