About University of Zagreb
The University of Zagreb School of Medicine is Croatia's oldest and largest medical faculty, founded in 1917, and the only Croatian medical school offering a complete six-year MD programme taught entirely in English for international students. The English-language programme was established in 2003 and has graduated hundreds of international doctors who now practise across Europe, the UK, and North America. Clinical training takes place at the Clinical Hospital Centre Zagreb (KBC Zagreb), the University Hospital Centre (UHC) Zagreb, and the Children's Hospital Zagreb — collectively providing over 3,500 beds and serving as Croatia's tertiary referral centres for the most complex cases.
The curriculum follows a traditional European model with two preclinical years followed by four years of increasing clinical immersion. Research strengths include neuroscience, oncology, and regenerative medicine. Zagreb is a safe, walkable European capital with excellent public transport, vibrant café culture, and very affordable living costs (approximately 50% lower than Western European capitals).
For UK students, tuition of approximately £10,000/year for an EU-recognised, GMC-registrable medical degree in an English-taught programme represents exceptional value.
