About University of Messina

The University of Messina is one of Sicily's two main universities, situated at the strategic Strait of Messina separating Sicily from mainland Italy. Its Faculty of Medicine provides clinical training at the Policlinico Universitario G. Martino — a large teaching hospital that is northeastern Sicily's primary referral centre.

The medical school has developed expertise in conditions prevalent in the Mediterranean basin and maintains important research in immunology, pharmacology, and environmental health — studying the health effects of volcanic environments (proximity to Mount Etna). Sicily's unique position as the Mediterranean's largest island creates distinctive health challenges and research opportunities. Messina is a port city with strong connections to Calabria and mainland Italy, offering affordable living, Sicilian cuisine, and Mediterranean climate.

The university was refounded after the devastating 1908 earthquake and maintains a tradition of resilience and community service. For UK students, while primarily Italian-taught, Messina offers exposure to Mediterranean clinical challenges and authentic Sicilian culture at very affordable costs.
