Marmara University is one of Istanbul's oldest and most established public universities (founded 1883 as a vocational school, university status since 1982) and its Faculty of Medicine offers a six-year English-taught medical programme — one of very few English-taught options at a Turkish state university. Clinical rotations take place at the Marmara University Pendik Training and Research Hospital — a major 700-bed teaching hospital on Istanbul's Asian side — and the Marmara University Sultan Abdülhamid Han Training and Research Hospital.
